When you setup your prayer closet you want to make sure you keep what you need for praying and spending time with God in there so you don’t have to spend time setting it up every time you go in to pray.
Yes, that means, you should have more than one of most of the items that are on your prayer closet checklist. For instance, most of us own more than one Bible. If you don’t, you may consider getting one or two more for other rooms in your home. After all the goal is for you to increase the time you spend with the Lord, and as you get more connected with him, you’ll find that your prayer closet may not be the only place that you study or pray.
You’ll also find that your prayer closet can have more than one purpose, meaning you can use it for more than one thing. Remember, it is your secret place, your shelter, and your sanctuary.
- Secret Place – it is where you will meet with your Heavenly Father in secret; Matthew 6:6
- Shelter – it is another place where God will cover you; Psalm 91
- Sanctuary – it is a place that you set apart for worshipping God; Psalm 134
It’s that quiet place you go to pray, worship the Lord, do your devotions, and study the word of God.
Now, here’s what we suggest you get and keep in your prayer closet:
- Bibles – as mentioned in our last post, “10 Reasons Why You Should Create a Prayer Closet,” to break free from the distractions of your electronic devices, you shouldn’t use Bible apps or electronic devices in your prayer closet. We’re suggesting that you use physical Bibles and have more than one version of the Bible in your prayer closet (ex. KJV, Message, Amplified, NIV, NCV, etc.).
- Concordance – a good Concordance will guide you in finding passages of scripture quickly.
- Bible Dictionary – a Bible dictionary is like an Encyclopedia that contains the books of the Bible, and the people, places and times in the Bible.
- Thesaurus – a thesaurus will help you when you find words during your Bible study whose meaning you may not completely understand. It will give you the synonyms of those words, and may help you understand what you’ve read.
- Prayer Journal – you should always have a prayer journal in your prayer closet so you can write prayer requests in, take notes, and write out any words God gives you while in prayer.
- Bible Study – keep Bible Study books and materials in your prayer closet, so you can also use your quiet time to study the Bible.
- Daily Devotional – some people like to start their prayer time reading their daily devotional, if that’s you keep yours handy.
- Dream Journal – I know this is something most people wouldn’t think of but it is a good idea — if you are a person who is a prolific dreamer — to also keep a dream journal in your prayer closet.
- Timer – if you need to limit your time in prayer due to work or other commitments, the first suggestion is that you start early enough so that you can spend quality time with God. We understand that you may have a lot going on in life, so get yourself a battery-operated timer unless you are fortunate enough to have an electrical outlet in your closet.
- Pens or pencils – be sure to keep a few pens or pencils just in case the one you are using stops working.
- Highlighters – keep multiple colors of highlighters to use during your Bible study or while reading your daily devotional. Tip: use different colors for different things. For example, highlight scriptures in pink, prayers in blue, words you will confess in orange, etc.
- Post-it Notes – you may write special prayer requests or reminders on sticky notes, so you can hang them and access them quickly.
